Ayurveda and YogaYoga for Vata Vata can be restless and always in motion. It is recommended that Vata have a steady and regular routine. Routine in everything is critical. This section will focus on Yoga as a regular practice. I will mention one pose for each dosha and recommend this book to you, "Yoga for your Type", by Dr. David Frawley and yoga teacher, Sandra Summerfield Kozak. Book is featured on the right.>> Vata is active, always on the go. But where are you going? Do you want
to be going in the right direction? Yoga is meant to keep the doshas in balance, in their proper flow. Yoga helps to calm Vata, cool Pitta, and helps Kapha, release. We will see that asanas that are balancing and grounding are good for Vata energy which can be impulsive or erratic. Also, Vata must learn to do the asana slowly, gently, not forcing the asanas. Tadasana, or mountain pose, would be great for Vata
Yoga for Pitta Pitta can be very driven, always wanting to learn new things, and on the emotional side be critical and get angry very easily. It is recommended that Pittas make room for meditation and working on quieting the mind. Pitta also rules the digestive system so asanas that help with "cooling" Pitta and helping them to relax will be beneficial. Yoga is meant to keep the doshas in balance, in their proper flow. Yoga helps to calm Vata, cool Pitta, and helps Kapha, release. Poses that generally "heat you up" would not be the asanas you would do often. Pitta needs to do asanas slowly and asanas that encourage slow, easy breathing would be beneficial. Cat Stretch would be a good asana for Pitta. It is restortative and relaxing. It works on the abdomen and helps release "heat" built up in the digestive tract.
Yoga for Kapha Kapha can be slow, not highly driven, happy to just go along. Emotionally they like to hold on to things. It is recommended that Kaphas need to move more and need to exert themselves a little. Kapha rules the chest region so asanas that help with opening up the chest would be beneficial. Longer yoga sessions would help with Kapha's complacency to do nothing rather than something. Yoga is meant to keep the doshas in balance, in their proper flow. Yoga helps to calm Vata, cool Pitta, and helps Kapha, release. Poses that generally "heat you up" and make you work would be the asanas you would do often. Warrior Pose would be a good asana for Kapha. It has one holding long in a position. It works on opening the chest and can help "heat up" the often sluggish, cold nature of Kapha.
